Matthew Greene, Health and Safety Manager for MPW’s Western District, encourages his teams to always ask “what if?” By focusing on anticipation rather than reaction, Greene has helped crews move from responding to incidents to preventing them altogether.
Under his leadership, teams across the district have strengthened collaboration between production and safety functions. Greene is especially proud of the way employees now take personal ownership of their own safety and that of their coworkers.
One of his most meaningful experiences involved mentoring a crew member who showed an early interest in safety. Greene invited the employee into safety discussions, explained the reasoning behind procedures, and encouraged continued learning. That mentorship helped inspire a career path into occupational safety.
A 23-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Greene learned early that safety is ultimately about people. “It’s about making sure everyone goes home safe and confident at the end of the day,” he said—a principle that continues to guide his leadership.
While much of his day includes reviewing reports and updating safety materials, Greene prefers time in the field, where he can observe work firsthand and talk directly with employees. “Real safety happens in conversation,” he said. “When people feel supported, they take ownership.”
Since joining MPW in 2018 and stepping into his current role in 2020, Greene has helped reinforce safety as a shared value across the district.
Outside of work, Greene enjoys time with his family and restoring classic cars—an interest that reflects the same patience and attention to detail he brings to his role.
“Safety is a personal commitment we make to one another,” Greene said. “When people truly care, everyone goes home safe.”
